The moated castle route in the city triangle of Aachen, Cologne and Bonn, with around 120 castles and palaces in a very small area, lies in one of the most castle-rich regions in Europe. Built on rivers, in small villages or even in the middle of the forest, they bear witness to the vibrant past of our region. Some of the stately homes can be visited and invite you to stop off and stay overnight.

The entire moated castle route can be cycled in eight stages on the well-maintained cycle path, which is signposted with its own tour logo. The route leads through a multifaceted landscape, along idyllic, natural stream and river valleys, through the agricultural Börde and through the low mountain region of the Eifel. Other cultural and historical highlights such as historic town centers, monasteries and mills line the route. Not to be overlooked are the deep holes in the Rhenish lignite mining area with the open-cast mining viewpoints and the recultivated slag heaps. In a few years' time, a huge lake landscape with a wide range of leisure activities is to be created here.
