Düren: Große Runde durch den Wald von Schloss Burgau
Düren
The tour through the forest of Burgau Castle is ideal in midsummer as it is mostly in the shade. At the end of the tour, it is worth taking a look at the castle grounds and stopping off at the castle café. If you have a little more time, don't miss the exhibitions.
Burgau Castle, whose origins date back to the 14th century, was acquired in 1917 along with the surrounding forest by the town of Düren with the support of the Benno Schoeller Foundation. After its destruction in the Second World War, the romantic moated castle was rebuilt with the help of the citizens' campaign "Save Burgau". In addition to exhibitions, events are also held in the festival and concert hall.
Directions
At the entrance to Burgau Castle, keep left, pass the signpost about the "Gemeine Fichte" and turn left at the first opportunity (towards the Bleckmann 01 circular trail). At the next junction, keep right and at the large crossroads with the two benches, go straight on to the end of the path and turn right. At the next crossroads, we turn left and are now back on the Bleckmann 01 circular trail. At the refuge, we keep straight on and continue along circular trail 01 (also a trail for the blind). At the T-junction, turn right and follow the path, which bends to the left, to the end. Here we turn right and follow circular trail 01 along the paved path past Weyern Estate. We continue along the now unpaved path until we reach a crossroads with a large stone. Here we turn right and follow the cycle path and hiking trail 01 along the moat of Gut Weyern. After around 400 m (from the entrance to Gut Weyern), the main path branches off to the right and leads back to Burgau Castle (shortcut option and barrier-free variant). However, we continue straight ahead on the now ascending path and at the top turn slightly right off the tarred path onto the unpaved path, which continues to ascend (be careful not to turn off onto the forest nature trail). At the end of the ascent, we turn right and continue along hiking trail 01. We now leave the forest and walk a sunny section of our hiking tour in fine weather. We leave the wide path at a tree stump and turn right onto a path (hiking trail 01). Where the path meets a wide path again (red barrier), we turn right and walk straight ahead until we reach a crossroads where there is a tree with a split trunk, one of which is just a stump. There is also a bench here. At this point we turn right and then left at the next crossroads towards the refuge. We walk past the hut and follow hiking trail 01 straight ahead until it joins a downhill path on the right. We follow this downhill and now reach a parking lot for hikers. We keep to the right and follow the tarred path and hiking trail 01 towards the animal shelter. We leave this on the left and continue straight ahead. At the junction with the forestry nature trail (insect hotel station), we turn left towards Burgau Castle and walk along the moat back to the starting point.
Note: If you turn right at the cycle path junction about 300 m after Gut Weyern immediately before the ascent and follow the main path back to the castle, the tour is also suitable for people with limited mobility who use a walking frame or wheelchair. Benches along the paths invite you to take a breather. The well-maintained haptic trails are also suitable for children in baby carriages and with balance bikes. The 2.3 km long forest nature trail in the forest of Burgau Castle is particularly appealing to families.
