VIA Erlebnisraum Römerstraße

Jülich

The imperial roads were the main arteries of the Roman Empire: over 100,000 kilometers, the solidly constructed road network made it possible to transport people, news and trade goods from all over the world across rivers, mountains and cultural borders.

Regardless of whether you set off on foot or hop on your bike: If you set out to discover the Roman Road Adventure Area, you are embarking on a journey through time along the Roman highways in the Rhineland. The cycling and hiking routes, which follow the Via Belgica from Übach-Palenberg to Cologne and the Agrippa Road from Cologne to Dahlem, take you past numerous sights that range from Roman times through the Middle Ages to the recent past. Cologne, the Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium, was the provincial capital of Lower Germania and the hub of these long-distance routes; the Via Belgica and the Agrippa Road meet here.

How did the Romans decide where to build their settlements? What did a Roman guard post look like? Why does the highway no longer run dead straight in some places? These and other questions are answered on an excursion to the Roman Road Experience.

Immerse yourself in the Roman history of the Rhineland and learn exciting and interesting facts about the roads, the archaeological monuments along the way and the sights in the surrounding area. We hope you enjoy your stroll through the cultural landscape along the Roman roads.

Our tip: Visit the Jülich Citadel Museum, where you can find out even more about the Roman Road Experience!
