Wildpferde auf der Sophienhöhe
Jülich
Sophienhöhe is a recultivated spoil tip from the Hambach open-cast mine. In early summer 2024, a number of Konik horses were released into the wild on the Goldene Aue, an open grassland with a lake basin. As natural "lawnmowers", they are intended to keep the grassland largely free of trees and shrubs. The wild horses will thus increase biodiversity in the recultivation area on the edge of the Hambach opencast mine. The area where the horses live can be accessed via a wildlife fence. The area can be reached on foot or by bike, but please do not feed the wild horses. There is plenty of natural forage in the extensive grassland.
The Sophienhöhe with its natural landscape, the Höller Horn and Römerturm viewpoints at the highest points, the Haselmaus Sophie nature trail and the Goldene Aue with its wild horses is ideal for interesting excursions close to nature - even with the family.
