Heimatmuseum Merzenich

Merzenich

The Merzenich local history museum was set up by the members of the local history association in the Engelen farmstead and opened on June 5, 1988. The farmstead was first mentioned in 1688 and was still inhabited until 1983. The museum is located in an old half-timbered house, where two rooms with original furniture as well as a bakery and smokehouse have been restored. You can also visit a blacksmith's and a cobbler's workshop as well as a mill in the barn. The farm has been a listed building since February 16, 1984. On September 12, 1989, the Rhineland Regional Association awarded the Rhineland Thaler to the members of the History and Heritage Association for their efforts in establishing the museum.

The wind of history blows in the historic farmhouse. It was first mentioned in 1688 and has been a listed building since 1983. Today it houses the local history museum with authentic furnishings from the old days and more.

Interesting history

The core building of the farm was erected around 1686. An old inscription in a door lintel bears witness to this. Initially, the building was used as a simple residence for the Engelen family. Gradually, the family built stables. The farm grew and remained in the family for generations. After Elisabeth Engelen's death in 1983, it was added to the list of monuments and sold to the municipality of Merzenich in 1986. Today's local history museum is run by the Merzenich History and Local History Association.
